Drifting meio- and macrobenthic invertebrates on tidal flats in Königshafen: A review

Abstract: Many benthic species have been recorded to occur in the water column above the tidal fiats in K6nigshafen. They were either passively suspended from the sediment or performed active migrations. Concerning both number of species and organisms, active migrations were more important. The causes for these migrations range from (1) individual escape from a sudden threat such as predator attack, over (2) group evasion of local subpopulations to avoid environmental deterioration, to (3) habitat changing of entire pop… Show more

“…PERMANOVA allows us to perform an ANOVA with P values obtained by permutation (Anderson et al 2008), thus avoiding the assumption of normality. Prior to run two-way PERMANOVA's, assumption of homogeneity of dispersion was tested with a PERMDISP and distances amongst centroids calculated on the interaction level (Quinn and Keough 2002).…”

“…Euclidean distance and Bray-Curtis-based resemblance matrices were used, respectively, for univariate and multivariate measures. Pairwise tests type III and Monte-Carlo P values were used since sometimes the total number of unique permutations did not exceed a hundred, whereas 4999 unique permutation is favourable (Anderson et al 2008).…”

“…We assume that our operational categories of intertidal and subtidal worms defined by their occurrence at two respective sites has its limits. Although egg cocoons are anchored in the sediment and juveniles hatch through the vertical stalks directly into subsurface sediment, which may help to keep worms within the narrow tidal zone (Gibbs 1968;Reise 1979), resuspension and subsequent drift of benthic juveniles with tidal currents has been recorded during phases of strong wave action (Armonies 1994(Armonies , 1998. With respect to the propagules of the subtidal S. armiger, no mechanism is known by which pelagic larvae could avoid settlement in the intertidal zone.…”
