An experiment was carried out investigating the colonization ability and specific pattern of copepods towards a provisional benthic habitat. Since copepods are known to disperse passively and actively, the experiment aimed to investigate the pool of colonizers of macrophytodetritus and the species-specific active colonization pathways. The experiment was performed in a Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica meadow on defaunated macrophytodetritus accumulations (mainly dead seagrass leaves) for two time intervals (24 h and 96 h). Active colonization by copepods, independently of their adjacent potential source pool habitat (bare sandy sediments, P. oceanica canopy, water column and macrophytodetritus) occurred within 24 h. Natural densities (as in the control treatments) were only reached by active colonization through the water column. Both neither diversities nor species composition of natural macrophytodetritus were ever reached by one single migratory pathway, therefore only a combination of interstitial migration and water column migration can explain the species occurrence under natural condition. Moreover, every potential adjacent source pool habitat, contributed species to the newly colonized macrophytodetritus. However, the main colonizers were mostly species with good swimming capabilities. The diverse pool of species present in the newly colonized macrophytodetritus underlines the complex communities and dispersion capabilities of copepods. Hence, macrophytodetritus possesses the potential ability to be a colonizer source pool for every adjacent habitat and thus behaves as a copepod hub for the entire seagrass ecosystem

Erosion and transport of juvenile benthic invertebrates, including bivalves, has the potential to alter patterns of distribution and abundance during the early postsettlement period. Field observations indicate that there is often great spatial variability in rates of transport of juvenile bivalves. Differences in transport among sites may arise from both physical and biological causes, including variation in water flow, sediment grain size, and the local biological community. In this study, an experiment was conducted in a laboratory flume to examine the effect of sediment source (4 subtidal sites in the Navesink River estuary, New Jersey, USA) and flow velocity on rates of transport of juvenile Mya arenaria and Gemma gemma. Rates of erosion of M. arenaria were significantly related to sediment volume eroded, suggesting that dispersal at high flow speeds is linked to bedload transport. Sediment erosion and clam transport was lower for sediment cores from the 2 sites where the sediment was covered by a mat of amphipod Ampelisca abdita tubes. Reduction of the tube mat resulted in a small but significant increase in sediment erosion. The results of this study and comparison of shear velocities between the laboratory and the field suggest that both the presence of an amphipod mat and low shear velocities will result in low rates of transport of sediment and juvenile clams in the field.

Two distinct modes of development in the common polychaete Scoloplos armiger (O. F. Mu¨ller, 1776) occur in the North Sea region: holobenthic development in egg cocoons and pelagic larvae hatching from suspended eggs. In the northern Wadden Sea near the island of Sylt, we observed that egg cocoons are produced intertidally while pelagic larvae originate from the adjacent subtidal zone. A previous genetic comparison between these subtidal and intertidal populations revealed distinct gene pools, suggesting that reproductive differences are not phenotypic but heritable. In this study, crossbreeding experiments show that intertidal and subtidal populations are reproductively isolated. Couples with males and females from different habitats had no offspring. Production of egg cocoons is determined by female origin from the intertidal zone. Pelagic larvae occurred only in couples with subtidal females and subtidal males. Intertidal males have spermatozoa with heads twice as long as those from subtidal males and a significantly shorter flagellum. We suspect that deviating sperm morphology may cause the reproductive breakdown at the fertilization stage. Juveniles hatching from cocoons have shorter anal cirri compared to juveniles that metamorphosed from pelagic larvae. We conclude there to be two sympatric sibling species in S. armiger: 'type I' in intertidal areas, which have egg cocoons, no pelagic larvae, elongated sperm heads, shortened sperm flagella and anal cirri; and a subtidal 'type S', lacking egg cocoons but with pelagic larvae, short sperm heads, long sperm flagella and anal cirri.
