The aim of this study is to examine the texts in the fifth grade Turkish textbook in terms of root values in the 2019 Turkish Language Teaching Program. Basic qualitative design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. The object of the study is the fifth grade Turkish textbook of the Secondary School and Imam Hatip Secondary School prepared by Anıttepe Publishing, which was used as a Turkish textbook at the fifth grade level of secondary school in the 2022-2023 academic year. Research data were obtained through document analysis. Within the scope of the research, 40 reading, listening and free reading texts under 8 units in the fifth grade Turkish textbook were analyzed in terms of ten root values. In these evaluations, the sub-values related to the ten root values were taken as criteria. As a result of the research, the texts in the fifth grade Turkish textbook were related to the ten root values in 173 places in total. It was concluded that the most used values in the textbook are responsibility, self-control, patriotism and love, while the least used values are justice and honesty. When the units in the textbook were examined in relation to the values, it was found that the root values were mostly used in the units of Our National Culture, Virtues, Individual and Society; and least in the units of Health and Sports, Science and Technology, Nature and the Universe. As a result of the research, it was determined that the root values were not homogeneously distributed in the units and texts in the fifth grade Turkish textbook.

Values Education in the COVID-19 Pandemic Process: An Example of "Arkadaş" Books Prepared by the Ministry of National Education

The pandemic process that deeply affects human life has brought many changes with it. In this process, some necessary measures have been taken. In our country, within the scope of these measures, schools were closed and distance education started. The Ministry of National Education published holiday books called “Arkadaş” in order to support students who are out of school. It is important to include universal and national values in books prepared for children in accordance with their developmental characteristics. In this study, the holiday books ‘’Arkadaş’’ were examined in terms of values by document analysis method. It has been determined which values were included in the books by making a descriptive analysis of the documents. As a result of the study, it was seen that these books, which were prepared for primary school 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades separately, contain many values. It has been determined that among these values, the value of cooperation is used the most, followed by the values of protecting cultural heritage and responsibility. It has been observed that values such as optimism, compassion, empathy and self-confidence are not included in the books. It is thought that these books can be enriched in terms of values and should not be limited only to the pandemic period.

Dil bir kültür aktarıcısıdır. Dil sayesinde toplumun kimliğini ve davranış özelliklerini yansıtan kültür ve kültürel değerler gelecek kuşaklara aktarılır. Türkçe dersi hem dil becerilerini geliştirmede hem de kültürel değerleri kazandırmada öncelikli bir derstir. Dilin kazandırılmasında rol sahibi olan Türkçe dersinde kültürel değerlerin incelenmesi dil kültür ilişkisinin kurulması açısından önemlidir. Bu bağlamda çalışmada Türkçe ders kitaplarındaki metinlerde yer alan kültürel değerlerin incelenmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Çalışmada nitel araştırma yaklaşımı benimsenmiş ve doküman analizi yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Seçkisiz örnekleme yoluyla 2, 3 ve 4. sınıf Türkçe ders kitaplarından her biri farklı yayınevi olmak üzere her sınıf seviyesinden birer kitap seçilmiştir. Seçilen kitaplar içerik analiziyle analiz edilmiş ve "Türk Dili, Türk Tarihi, Şehirler, Sanat, Bağımsızlık Simgesi, Din, Gelenek-Görenek" olmak üzere 7 tema üzerinde veriler sınıflandırılmıştır. İncelenen kitaplarda en çok Türk Tarihi temasının vurgulandığı ve en çok 4. sınıf ders kitabında kültürel değerlere rastlandığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Bunun yanı sıra bütün sınıflarda eşit düzeyde Bağımsızlık Simgesi teması vurgulanırken, 4. sınıfta Sanat ve Din teması diğer sınıflara göre daha çok vurgulanmıştır.
