Increasing data reveals that gelatin that has been methacrylated is involved in a variety of physiologic processes that are important for therapeutic interventions. Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel is a highly attractive hydrogels-based bioink because of its good biocompatibility, low cost, and photo-cross-linking structure that is useful for cell survivability and cell monitoring. Methacrylated gelatin (GelMA) has established itself as a typical hydrogel composition with extensive biomedical applications. Recent advances in GelMA have focused on integrating them with bioactive and functional nanomaterials, with the goal of improving GelMA's physical, chemical, and biological properties. GelMA's ability to modify characteristics due to the synthesis technique also makes it a good choice for soft and hard tissues. GelMA has been established to become an independent or supplementary technology for musculoskeletal problems. Here, we systematically review mechanism-of-action, therapeutic uses, and challenges and future direction of GelMA in musculoskeletal disorders. We give an overview of GelMA nanocomposite for different applications in musculoskeletal disorders, such as osteoarthritis, intervertebral disc degeneration, bone regeneration, tendon disorders and so on.

Developing biomaterials for hip prostheses is challenging and requires dedicated attention from researchers. Hip replacement is an inevitable and remarkable orthopedic therapy for enhancing the quality of patient life for those who have arthritis as well as trauma. Generally, five types of hip replacement procedures are successfully performed in the current medical market: total hip replacements, hip resurfacing, hemiarthroplasty, bipolar, and dual mobility systems. The average life span of artificial hip joints is about 15 years, and several studies have been conducted over the last 60 years to improve the performance and thereby increase the lifespan of artificial hip joints. Present-day prosthetic hip joints are linked to the wide availability of biomaterials. Metals, ceramics, and polymers are some of the most promising types of biomaterials; nevertheless, each biomaterial has advantages and disadvantages. Metals and ceramics fail in most applications owing to stress shielding and the emission of wear debris; ongoing research is being carried out to find a remedy to these unfavorable responses. Recent research found that polymers and composites based on polymers are significant alternative materials for artificial joints. With growing research and several biomaterials, recent reviews lag in effectively addressing hip implant materials' individual mechanical, tribological, and physiological behaviors. This Review comprehensively investigates the historical evolution of artificial hip replacement procedures and related biomaterials' mechanical, tribological, and biological characteristics. In addition, the most recent advances are also discussed to stimulate and guide future researchers as they seek more effective methods and synthesis of innovative biomaterials for hip arthroplasty application.

Mucoadhesion is an extremely important field of adhesion science and the comprehensive understanding and modulation of mucoadhesion can lead to lifesaving materials and technologies. For instance, deadly cases of COVID‐19 (SARS‐CoV‐2) cytokine storm are associated with viral adhesion and overproduction of mucus, which obstructs the airways. Mucin is the key polymeric compound that is known as a family of high molecular weight, heavily glycosylated proteins in epithelial tissues. Mucoadhesion can occur in many different ways such as receptor specific and charge interactions, covalent or noncovalent bonds. New mucin‐mimic polymers that replicate its beneficial traits can prevent biofilm formation and biofouling not only in biotechnology but also in membrane technologies. This review addresses the latest understandings related to mucin's role in wet adhesion considering different physiological conditions and shows how this translates into interfacial polymer adhesion. Advances in mucoadhesion measurement techniques including the rheological aspects of polymer–mucin adhesive interactions are presented. Specific mucoadhesive systems are discussed such as hydrogel mucoadhesion, catechol/dopamine functionalization, and polymeric nanoparticles. This overview may expand the current understanding of mucoadhesion between soft materials but also contributes to elastocapillary phenomena in soft materials design and applications such as new membranes, drugs, pharmaceutical devices, and lubricated surfaces.
