Tuning of the blue emission from europium-doped alkaline earth chloroborate thin films activated in air

Abstract: Thin films of M 2 B 5 O 9 Cl:Eu (MϭCa, Sr, Ba͒ were prepared on glass substrates using spray pyrolysis. Blue cathodoluminescence due to the abnormal reduction of Eu 3ϩ →Eu 2ϩ was obtained by annealing films in air. The cation of the host lattice was found to affect the effectiveness of the reduction process, which could result in influencing the emission band. By selecting types and composition of alkaline cation, it was possible to tune the dominant emitting wavelength between 435 to 465 nm. Activation of the… Show more

“…For samples deposited at 275 and 325 8C the boron/strontium ratios were 1.85(20) and 1.81 (20), respectively, and are within experimental error of the expected ratio for SrB 2 O 4 . By contrast, samples deposited at 350 and 400 8C had boron/strontium ratios of 1.65(10) and 1.32(10), respectively, and are not within the experimental error of a 2:1 boron/strontium ratio.…”

“…Also, there is lower outgassing from thin oxide films in field-effect displays. [19,20] In the present work, the deposition of SrB 2 O 4 thin films displayed an ALD window between 300 and 375 8C. There are many lanthanide ALD processes that show ALD windows over similar temperature ranges.…”

“…When the Ca 2+ replaced the Ba 2+ partially in the host lattices of BaB 8 O 13 :Eu 3+ , the excitation intensity was decreased and the CT band shifted to higher energy side. The fact would be due to that the cation structures of borate have an influence on the electron transfer and the energy of the CT band of Eu 3+ would be affected [11,12]. It is known that the ionic radius of Ca 2+ , Sr 2+ , Ba 2+ are 0.106, and 0.127, 0.15 nm [13][14][15], respectively, and Sr 2+ is well matched with the Ba 2+ , but Ca 2+ showed the larger radius difference compared with Ba 2+ .…”

“…It is particularly effective for the deposition of various semiconductors with nanosize particles. Recent publications show that it can be successfully applied for fabrication of the bright color phosphors [10][11][12]. Furthermore, SP employs a precursor solution whereby the uniform distribution of nanoparticles in the voids of a porous material can be archived by soaking a sample under ultrasonic vibration.…”
