Tunable optical filter having a large dynamic range

Abstract: A novel (to our knowledge) concept for a tunable birefringent filter with a high dynamic range is proposed and demonstrated by using a stack of liquid-crystal retarders having different thicknesses following an arithmetic sequence. Each retarder is between crossed polarizers with its optic axis oriented azimuthally at 45 degrees to the polarizer axis. The tunable filter was fabricated by using nematic liquid crystals demonstrating tunability over a range of 800 nm, covering the visible and the near IR; hence i… Show more

“…Effort has been devoted to, e.g., sensing the different polarization properties of the incoming light, 25,26 polarization insensitivity, 27 or wider spectral ranges. [28][29][30][31] The main drawback of these Lyot-Ohman filters is the high loss in transmission because of the series of polarizers. In any case, 50% of the light is lost because of the first polarizer.…”

“…For effective frequency separation, multimode filters are used. These are fabricated by creating a cavity of extended size in a Fabry-Perot (FP) resonator, as well as by using cascaded and coupled resonators [17,[29][30][31]. These cascaded structures consist of separate FP filters connected in series.…”

“…These cascaded structures consist of separate FP filters connected in series. Changing the optical properties of individual filters does not affect the properties of the neighboring filters [29][30][31]. The use of PhC technology can remarkably improve the tuning capability of individual channels within these filters and optical switches for WDM optical interconnect applications.…”

“…For effective separation of certain frequencies, multimode filters are used that can be obtained by creating a cavity of extended size in a Fabry-Pé rot (FP) resonator, as well as using cascaded and coupled resonators. Cascade structure consist of separate components (FP filters) connected in series, while changing the optical properties of each of them does not affect the properties of the neighboring filters [1][2][3][4][5]. The development of integrated compact multi-channel optical filters for various applications is a rapidly developing area.…”
