Tunable magneto-granular phononic crystals

Abstract: This paper reports on the study of the dynamics of 1D magneto-granular phononic crystals composed of a chain of spherical steel beads inside a properly designed magnetic field. This field is induced by an array of permanent magnets, located in a holder at a given distance from the chain. The theoretical and experimental results of the band gap structure are displayed, including all six degrees of freedom for the beads, i.e. three translations and three rotations. Experimental evidence of transverse-rotational … Show more

“…While vector solitons have been previously observed in optics [26,27], this is the first time -to the best of our knowledgethat such phenomenon is experimentally observed in the elastic case. Finally, we note that even in the linear regime our system supports coupled translationalrotational modes (see SI for details [23]), a feature previously only observed in granular crystals [28,29]. Next, we test the validity of our analytical solution Eqs.…”

“…The key limitations in developing nonlinear acoustic metamaterials pertain to the typically weak efficiency of their nonlinear response, combined with a lack of control over this nonlinearity. Examples of tailoring the acoustic or elastic wave nonlinearity of a system are found in granular crystals, yet the tunability is intrinsically limited due to the Hertz-Mindlin contact behavior [40,41].…”

“…27 Experimental evidence of transverse rotational modes has also been observed in a 1D magnetogranular phononic crystal, with beads of 15.875 mm diameter. 28 Effects of nonlinear dynamic hysteresis, such as nonlinear absorption, have been shown to occur in granular chains under torsional excitation. 29 Whilst the experimental configuration and excitation conditions reported above differ somewhat from those described in this paper, these particle rotation and nonlinear hysteretic effects could constitute a further source of discrepancies between FEA and experiment, since the FEA is limited to the axisymmetric case.…”
