Tumours of peripheral nerves in the upper extremity: A 22-year epidemiological study

Abstract: Peripheral nerve tumours are uncommon. Our aims were to calculate the incidence and relative frequencies, to define sites of nerve tumours and to judge preoperative symptoms and outcomes of intervention. The results of 53 patients, with 68 tumours and histopathological diagnoses of true neoplasms, who had been operated on at the Department of Hand Surgery, Malmo, Sweden, between 1986 and 2007, were analysed. Schwannomas were the most common tumour (n=42). The incidence of schwannomas was 0.62/100 000 inhabitan… Show more

“…Manifesta-se habitualmente como lesão única de crescimento lento e indolor ao longo de vários anos, sem sintomas específicos. 1,2 Contudo, por vezes surge num contexto de múltiplas lesões, descrito na literatura em raros casos não associados a síndromes familiares. [3][4][5] Os schwanomas esporádicos manifestam-se sobretudo entre a terceira e sexta década sem predomínio de géne-ro.…”

“…The patient had no symptoms or impaired sensation after exploration, which is usually the case after excision of a benign schwannoma [8]. The tumour was easily excised, which is not the case for a granular cell tumour that may occur in the median or the ulnar nerve [9].…”

“…The most common nerve tumors are neurofibroma and Schwannoma; the latter is usually treated with enucleation and rarely with remaining symptoms or recurrence 1, 2. However, some pathological conditions with tumor formation may be difficult to reveal, since they develop insidiously in young patients and cause predominantly motor dysfunction with milder sensory involvement.…”
