“…INTESTINAL adenocarcinomas are the most frequently reported type of tumours in sheep (Ross 1980) and have also been reported in other domestic animal species and in human beings (Johnstone and others 1983, Hamir 1985, McCoy and others 2009). In sheep, these tumours have a low incidence (Else 2007), although an incidence of up to 6 per cent in some populations has been documented (Simpson and Jolly 1974). In Norway, intestinal adenocarcinomas were described in 2.9 per cent of 1256 adult sheep submitted for postmortem examination over a period of eight‐and‐a‐half years at a research institute (Ulvund 1983).…”

“…Exposure to phenoxy and picolinic acid herbicides has been associated with higher incidences of ovine intestinal adenocarcinoma (Ulvund 1983, Newell and others 1984). Ingestion of bracken fern ( Pteridium aquilinum ), in conjunction with papillomavirus infection, is associated with oesophageal and bladder neoplasms in cattle (Hopkins 1986), and may have a similar role in sheep (Else 2007). The pasture grazed by this particular animal had never been treated with herbicides to the best of the owner's knowledge, and was free of bracken.…”

“…This left seven hips (four hips with staged FAI correction, three healthy control hips) of four sheep in the final study cohort. All sheep were 2.5 years old, corresponding to a mean age of approximately 22 human years [7,42]. The mean body weight was 67 6 6 kg (range, 63-75 kg).…”
