Tumour necrosis factor-alpha levels in aqueous humour and serum from patients with uveitis: the involvement of HLA-B27

Abstract: The concentration of TNF-alpha in aqueous humour in patients who are HLA-B27 positive is significantly greater than in those who are B27 negative. No significant differences in the concentrations of TNF-alpha in serum or aqueous humour in patients with or without rheumatic diseases were detected. TNF-alpha is a cytokine that may participate actively in the pathogenesis of clinical uveitis.

“…86 Corresponding serum and aqueous humor elevations of TNF-α have also been detected in patients with ankylosing spondylitis and anterior uveitis. 167 A greater elevation of IL-6 in aqueous humor as compared to serum has been reported. 113 Serum cytokine assays have revealed ankylosing spondylitis to be associated with increased TNF-α, 168 as well as IL-6 168,169 but not IL-1β or IFN-γ.…”

“…30 The activated macrophage by H. pylori also produce proinflammatory cytokines; IL-1, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, TNF-a, and IFN-g. 20 Most of these cytokines are also increased in the aqueous humour of the patients with idiopathic acute anterior uveitis, and TNF-a may participate actively in the pathogenesis of clinical uveitis. 31 H. pylori and its antibodies circulate the blood stream, and eventually enter the anterior chamber of both eyes through blood-aqueous humour barrier. However, PSS usually occurs repeatedly in unilateral eye, but not in bilateral eyes.…”
