Tualang Honey Protects Keratinocytes from Ultraviolet Radiation‐Induced Inflammation and DNA Damage

Abstract: Malaysian tualang honey possesses strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Here, we evaluated the effect of tualang honey on early biomarkers of photocarcinogenesis employing PAM212 mouse keratinocyte cell line. Keratinocytes were treated with tualang honey (1.0%, v/v) before a single UVB (150 mJ/cm2) irradiation. We found that treatment of tualang honey inhibited UVB-induced DNA damage, and enhanced repair of UVB-mediated formation of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) and 8-oxo-7, 8-dihydro-2′-… Show more

“…The anti-inflammatory effect of honey was long established through various studies [14, 16, 23, 29] on non-arid region honey, yet nothing was available on arid region varieties. The research results demonstrated here indicate that arid region honey also possesses anti-inflammatory effects similar to previously studied non-arid honey types.…”

“…Examples of ROS are singlet oxygen, superoxide, peroxyl, and hydroxyl radicals. These ruthless free radicals originate from endogenous stressors, resulting from natural by-products of cellular metabolism, or exogenous stressors such as UV light, pollutants, drugs, smoke, or radiation [31,32]. As their name suggests, these reactive molecules provoke the deterioration of membranes, lipids, amino acids, and DNA [33].…”

“…The band density for each test was compared to the control and the bands were analyzed using ImageJ 1.46 software [provided by NIH (http://imagej.nih.gov/ij/)]. The values were normalized to the β-actin band density [7,10,11]. Three independent experiments were performed to evaluate the P2Y 12 expression.…”
