SUMMARY
In an investigation of tryptophan metabolism in 16 psychotic children, a defect which may represent impaired functioning of pyridoxal‐phosphate dependent enzyme systems has been demonstrated in 9 cases. The administration of oral pyridoxine appears to reverse the abnormality.
There is an apparent correlation between the abnormality and the clinical subgroup of children who showed deviant behaviour from an early age. With one exception, the children who had regressed into psychotic behaviour later, after a normal start, showed no abnormality as tested. The possible significance of the findings is discussed.
