Trust and reciprocity with transparency and repeated interactions

Abstract: Keywords: Transparency Trust Reciprocity Repeated interaction Business alliances SOX This paper uses data from a controlled laboratory environment to study the impact of transparency (i.e., complete information versus incomplete information) and repeated interactions on the level of trust and trustworthiness (reciprocity) in an investment game setting. The key findings of the study are that transparency (complete information) significantly increases trusting behavior in one-shot interactions. This result persi… Show more

“…The link we found between partnership stability and trust and reciprocity is consistent with previous studies (e.g., Kanagaretnam et al 2010). The link between variability and uncertainty, and higher trust and reciprocity contradicts other published studies.…”

“…Abbink and Herrimann (2011) found that uncertainty led to antisocial behavior. Previous trust experiments similarly show variability and uncertainty lead to lower levels of trust (Croson 1996, Rapoport et al 1996, Kanagaretnam et al 2010). We cannot be certain about the processes that underpin our contradictory findings.…”

“…Trust is an essential trait in networking (Kanagaretnam et al, 2010). Reliance on a particular type of trust depends on the developmental phase of the venture (Martinez and Aldrich, 2011).…”

“…Without any recourse by the sender, within the context of a one-shot game, there is no reason to expect the receiver to return anything to the sender. Moving from a one-shot to a repeated game without re-matching across rounds induces increased trust and reciprocity (see Bohnet and Huck, 2004;Cochard et al, 2004;Kanagaretnam et al, 2009b). Table 4 presents the results of a regression for reciprocity which includes game treatments, sequence, order and their interactions.…”
