Tropical Wetland (TropWet) Mapping Tool: The Automatic Detection of Open and Vegetated Waterbodies in Google Earth Engine for Tropical Wetlands

Abstract: Knowledge of the location and extent of surface water and inundated vegetation is vital for a range of applications including flood risk management, biodiversity monitoring, quantifying greenhouse gas emissions, and mapping water-borne disease risk. Here, we present a new tool, TropWet, which enables users of all abilities to map wetlands in herbaceous dominated regions based on simple unmixing of optical Landsat satellite imagery in the Google Earth Engine. The results demonstrate transferability throughout t… Show more

“…using data from other organizations, previous field or professional expertise in remote sensing to develop classification algorithms that do not require the use of bespoke training data. The TropWet tool developed by Hardy, Oakes, and Ettritch [ 37 ] is a demonstration of this in which satellite imagery (Landsat, 30 m resolution) is automatically classified for a user-specified area and time period using a Google Earth Engine interface.…”

“…Examples include the influences of vegetation and water on spatial patterns of malaria cases in Ethiopia [ 27 ], Swaziland [ 28 ], and the Brazilian Amazon [ 29 ], and high-resolution malaria risk mapping in Vietnam [ 30 ] and Madagascar [ 31 ]. Landsat is also frequently used to create classified land cover maps and derive vegetation and moisture indices for analysis and mapping of anopheline mosquito habitats [ 23 , 32 , 33 ].…”

“…To date, the use of GEE for public health applications, and malaria in particular, has been limited [ 88 , 89 ]. However, recent studies have used GEE to map mosquito habitats in Malawi [ 40 ] and other countries in southern Africa [ 33 ]. Commercial computing service providers, such as Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services, have also provided access to extensive satellite data archives via their platforms.…”
