Abstract:We investigated the relationship between digestive function and ecological distribution for four related species of Gastropoda (Cerithidea rhizophorarum, Cerithidea cingulata, Batillaria multiformis, and Batillaria attramentaria) inhabiting the Tanaka River estuary (Mie Prefecture, Japan). We compared the digestive enzyme activities for four hard degradable carbohydrates, namely, cellulose, mannan, xylan, and laminarin. Among the investigated four species, Cerithidea rhizophorarum showed the highest cellulase, mannanase, xylanase, and laminarinase activities, and was also dominantly distributed in the estuary reed bed. The results of CN stable isotopic analysis suggested that this species assimilated organic matter derived from reeds. Hard degradable carbohydrates, including plant components derived from the reed bed or from dry land, accumulate in the sediment of estuaries. Estuarine benthic animals are assumed to consume these accumulated hard degradable carbohydrates, as well as microphytobenthos and particulate organic matter (including phytoplankton). Our present findings suggest that Cerithidea rhizophorarum is dominant in reed beds because it can more efficiently digest plant-derived carbohydrates than can Cerithidea cingulata, B. multiformis, and B. attramentaria. To the best of our knowledge, ours is the first study to demonstrate that the specific ecological distribution of related animal species with similar ecological traits can be explained by the efficiency of their digestive enzyme activity.

The effect of in situ acidification on the stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen was tested in several invertebrates living in an eelgrass system. Dried and ground samples of individuals were weighted in silver cups and treated in situ with 10% HCl. Control samples were measured without acidification. This treatment to remove inorganic carbon significantly decreased the δ13C values. The δ15N values were not affected by this method of acidification. In contrast to the acid‐washing method the tested procedure seems suitable to remove inorganic carbon in small invertebrate species.

To examine the trophic ecology of the ascidian Styela clava in an aquaculture system of Korea, stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes were analyzed monthly in S. clava, coarse (>20 μm, CPOM) and fine particulate organic matters (0.7<<20 μm, FPOM). CPOM (means: −18.5±1.2‰, 9.3±0.7‰) were significantly higher δ N values of FPOM than those of CPOM, suggesting that they rely largely on the FPOM as a dietary source. In addition, our results displayed that the relative importance between CPOM and FPOM as dietary source for the ascidians can be changed according to the availability of each component in ambient environment, probably reflecting their feeding plasticity due to non-selective feeding irrespective of particle size. Finally, our results suggest that dynamics of pico-and nano-size plankton (i.e., FPOM) as an available nutritional source to S. clava should be effectively assessed to maintain and manage their sustainable aquaculture production.
