Tris(alkyne) and Bis(alkyne) Complexes of Coinage Metals: Synthesis and Characterization of (cyclooctyne)3M+ (M = Cu, Ag) and (cyclooctyne)2Au+ and Coinage Metal (M = Cu, Ag, Au) Family Group Trends

Abstract: The tris(alkyne) copper complex [(cyclooctyne) 3 Cu][SbF 6 ] has been synthesized using cyclooctyne and in situ generated CuSbF 6 . Tris(alkyne) silver complexes [(cyclooctyne) 3 Ag] + involving weakly coordinating counterions such as [SbF 6 ] − and [PF 6 ] − have also been isolated in good yield using cyclooctyne and commercially available AgSbF 6 and AgPF 6 . These coinage metal tris(alkyne) adducts have trigonal-planar metal sites. The alkyne carbon atoms and the metal site form distorted spoke-wheel (rathe… Show more

“…As determined by X-ray crystallography, complex 1 features two Me 6 C 6 ligands coordinated to Cu through h 2 interactions. The Cu À C bond lengths are 2.092(2) and 2.192 (2) , and are comparable with those previously reported for h 2arene, [13,22,30] alkyne, [31] and alkene [32] complexes of copper.…”

“…Previous works have also reported that when metal ions coordinate to the CC bond, the frequency of the CC stretching vibration decreases. [37,38] The appearance of a new subpeak at 2160 cm −1 in our experiments indicates an interaction between lead ions and the diyne links. Note that in the graphdiyne powder sample we used, only the diyne bonds exposed to the surface participated in the adsorption process and contributed to the redshift of the CC stretching peak.…”

“…[1,5,6] An area of major research focus in recent years has been the chemistry of isolable alkyne-gold [13,14] and alkene-gold [13,[15][16][17] complexes since they serve as useful models for key intermediates believed to present in the above mentioned processes. There are several structurally characterized, auxiliary ligand supported and auxiliary ligand free goldalkyne [14,[18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26] and gold-alkene adducts presently known. N-heterocyclic carbene ligands are particularly useful in this regard.…”
