Triple-Responsive Block Copolymer Micelles with Synergistic pH and Temperature Response

Abstract: Multifunctional, stimuli-responsive block copolymers have been prepared via the sequential atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and the in-house synthesized 1′-(2-methacryloxyethyl)-3′,3′-dimethyl-6-nitrospiro-(2H-1-benzopyran-2,2′-indoline) (SPMA) monomer. Two PDMAEMA-b-PSPMA diblock copolymers, containing 3 and 14 mol % SPMA, were synthesized. The amphiphilic nature of the PDMAEMA-b-PSPMA diblock copolymers led to the formation of well-defined spherical… Show more

“…[1d,6] Photoresponsive chromophores including azobenzene (Azo), spiropyran, and donor–acceptor Stenhouse adducts have been introduced to amphiphilic copolymers. [6a,c,7] The chromophores photoisomerization change the polarity and hydrophilicity of the segments, further switching scale and morphology of the self‐assemblies. For example, Barner–Kowollik's group fabricated photoresponsive Azo‐contained miktoarm star polymers.…”

“…Moreover, the protonation/deprotonation of SPs controlled by pH was also investigated on controlling nanopore flux to cation or anion. [ 97 ] Balme and co‐workers reported nanopores coated with SPs terminated PEG. The conductance of KCl through the nanopores could be controlled by light, due to the reversible closed ‐ open isomerization of SPs.…”

“…[35][36][37] There are many examples of pH-responsive polymers based on either weak polyacids such as poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) 38,39 and poly(acrylic acid) 40 or weak polybases such as poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) 41 or poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMA). 42,43 The former class is particularly relevant to the present study. Ionization of carboxylic acid groups confers polyelectrolytic character which causes PMAA to swell at high pH; this results in a conformational switch from compact (hyper-coiled) to highly extended chains.…”
