Categoria: Em Perigo (EN)Última avaliação: 30/09/2021 (ajustada em 2022) Ano da publicação: 07/02/2024Trinomys yonenagae é endêmica do Brasil e ocorre apenas no estado da Bahia, sendo restrita às dunas arenosas da margem esquerda do rio São Francisco, nos municípios de Ibiraba a Queimadas. A extensão de ocorrência (EOO) da espécie é estimada em 834 km² e a área de ocupação (AOO) é estimada em 316 km², considerando as duas manchas de dunas com registro da espécie. As dunas do médio rio São Francisco, onde a espécie ocorre, estão sofrendo forte perda de habitat, 50% nos últimos 10 anos, devido às extrações de areia e lenha, expansão urbana, assentamentos rurais e turismo desordenado, que aumentam o pisoteio e o tráfego de veículos. Essas ações levam à desestabilização das dunas e degradação contínua da qualidade do hábitat, causando a fragmentação severa da população, dada a sua baixa capacidade de dispersão e fidelidade às dunas. Desta forma, Trinomys yonenagae foi categorizada como Em Perigo (EN), pelos critérios B1ab(ii,iii)+2ab(ii,iii).

Behavior is a useful trait for comparative studies that provide the comprehension of phylogenetic relationships among species. Here, we present a description of two spiny-rats species’ behavioral repertoire, Clyomys laticeps and Trinomys setosus (Rodentia: Echimyidae). The affiliative and agonistic behavioral patterns were sampled during a three-year study of captive populations of wild animals. Observational data were collected in two phases under different arrangements of individuals in groups. We also compare the behavioral traits of T. setosus and C. laticeps with the known behavioral patterns of Trinomys yonenagae. We add categories to the previous descriptions of T. setosus and a standard ethogram for C. laticeps. Trinomys setosus showed a visual and vocal display we called foot-trembling, which was not described in this form and function for other species studied until now. We discuss the differences in their sociality levels and similarities and differences among behavior patterns and repertoires.

The foods consumed by animals reflect their adaptations and ecological roles, which makes diet an important trait for ecological, evolutionary, and paleobiological research. Rodents are the most species‐rich order of mammals and are also ecologically diverse, consuming a wide range of foods. To relate form with function, and to study diversification in the context of diet and feeding, researchers should follow classification schemes that capture diet composition. We evaluated existing diet datasets for mammals as well as previous classification schemes developed for rodents. To propose a suitable categorical scheme, we defined splits within plant‐eating and animal‐eating rodents, aiming to capture the intrinsic differences in diet composition in terms of the accessibility, nutrient content, and digestibility of various food items. Our proposal includes eight categories (Carnivore, Folivore, Frugivore, Granivore, Omnivore, Specialist Herbivore, Unknown, and Vermivore) in which species can be assigned with information from species accounts and field guides. To avoid ambiguity, we provide examples and detailed criteria for each diet category. For biologically tractable comparative research, we ask researchers to use our diet categories for rodent species. The categories can also be applied at other taxonomic levels or to different populations, sexes, or ontogenetic stages. We call for further study of the natural history of small mammals and the uptake of primary data into open databases.
