Peaks in climate change newspaper coverage have been attributed to key events, such as major international climate change summits, on the basis that these are reported. This approach overlooks the possibility that unreported events have capacity to focus journalists' and editors' attention on climate change. This study considers the extent to which meteorological and political events-derived externally from what is reported in the media itself (some reported, some not)-coincide with attention to climate change in four UK newspapers. We call these events 'news prompts', since they are potential rather than actual news pegs: some are translated into news stories, others are not. The study brings together literatures on agenda-setting, newsroom practices, and the political economy and ideologies of newspapers. We find that the four newspapers we analyse have responded differently to climate-change related events including international policy events and extreme weather. In recent years, The Mail, The Telegraph and The Times have been relatively insensitive to climate change news prompts in comparison to the more left-leaning Guardian. As climate change coverage increases, so does sensitivity to climate news prompts. This suggests that the ideology of newspapers and the political economy of media outlets may drive climate coverage as much as routine newsgathering practices.

This methodological paper discusses the application of etic and emic perspectives in producing data sets for the study of journalistic praxis. The concepts refer to the researcher-analyst’s and the practitioner-informant’s viewpoints, respectively, and that being the case, they have inherent weaknesses if used independently. We argue that these shortcomings can be mitigated through an integrated application of the concepts and by seeing the two perspectives as complementary to each other. Combining etic and emic perspectives will allow for a more comprehensive understanding of complex yet routinized real-life behaviour such as journalistic work. Following the appraisal of the etic-emic combination methodology, we present the results of a systematic literature review. We explore the application of this methodology in the study of journalistic work, as recounted in international journal articles published between 2000 and 2017. After keyword searches into several databases and a manual review of 3018 items, a corpus of 228 relevant articles was analysed. Our results demonstrate the studies’ disproportionate emphasis on the earliest phases of the journalistic process, that is, topic discovery, topic selection, point of view selection and sourcing, and the relative scarcity of studies applying a fully integrated etic-emic-combination methodology. We also report on, for example, the types of research material used and the media studied. We conclude with recommendations for expanding and diversifying the use of etic-emic-combination methodology in journalism studies to give us a more balanced understanding of the field.

El análisis de contenido es una herramienta habitual en los estudios sobre los medios de comunicación y en otros ámbitos relacionados. Suele utilizarse para identificar patrones en los textos periodísticos que ayuden a estudiar qué y cómo se comunica la información al público. Sin embargo, estos resultados, que suelen cuantificarse basándose únicamente en los mensajes y detalles del informe de noticias, tienen limitaciones para los investigadores que buscan establecer una conexión entre la producción periodística -el típico informe final de noticias- y las prácticas periodísticas implicadas en el montaje del informe. La metodología que aquí se propone pretende establecer un enfoque sistemático para explorar las prácticas periodísticas de abastecimiento a través del análisis en profundidad de los reportajes, fundamentalmente ampliando el objetivo de la investigación más allá del reportaje y explorando las contribuciones de las fuentes, como los comunicados de prensa originales u otros informes de los medios de comunicación. Al rastrear y registrar sistemáticamente ese material, se pueden hacer descubrimientos valiosos y originales, que luego se pueden cruzar con los resultados del análisis de contenido cuantitativo más tradicional para proporcionar nuevas perspectivas. Este método requiere dos fases de investigación, que se describen en este artículo. El artículo también explora cómo puede utilizarse el análisis de contenido para estudiar las prácticas periodísticas, así como un marco para llevar a cabo la investigación, con consejos y directrices tanto para obtener como para registrar el material de origen y los datos.
