Trigeminal neuralgia

Abstract: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is an exemplary condition of neuropathic facial pain. However, formally classifying TN as neuropathic pain based on the grading system of the International Association for the Study of Pain is complicated by the requirement of objective signs confirming an underlying lesion or disease of the somatosensory system. The latest version of the International Classification of Headache Disorders created similar difficulties by abandoning the term symptomatic TN for manifestations caused by m… Show more

“…When considering the pathophysiological aspects of idiopathic and classical TN, it seems reasonable that the discussed possible modes of action and ultimately the effect of topical ambroxol could very well differ between the two entities. The significance of the neurovascular contact in classical TN has been investigated thoroughly, 3,4 whereas pathophysiological aspects of idiopathic TN remain poorly understood and future investigations shall investigate whether "this proposed division is meaningful in a clinical and scientific context." 5 So far it has been widely accepted and will consequently also be implemented into the upcoming International Classification of Orofacial Pain.…”
