Trigeminal complications arising after surgery of cranial base meningiomas

Abstract: Chronic severe facial pain is a feared sequel of cranial base surgery. This study explores the symptomatology, incidence and impact on the individual of postoperative de novo trigeminal nerve affection as well as the recovery potential. Out of 231 patients operated for cranial base meningiomas at the Karolinska University Hospital during 7 years, 25 complained of de novo trigeminal symptoms at clinical follow-up 3 months after surgery. Six were later lost to follow-up leaving 19 participants in the study, whic… Show more

“…No matter the symptoms were a persistent (caused by tumor) or de novo disease (caused by surgery), this sensory complication particularly affects the postoperative quality of life, which plays a critical role in patient satisfaction with surgical outcome. 8,27 In this study, we also found an association between the TSN distribution and gustatory dysfunction. All patients complaining about TSN had a lower gustatory function on the affected side.…”

“…Even the data on neurocognitive toxicity related to Whole brain RT are still contradictory 24 . White matter changes and cognition problems after SRS have been reported to occur in 0 to 12% of patients 5,50,97,119,131,151 . There are several identified predisposing factors that contribute to overall neurocognitive decline after brain irradiation, including tumor histology, volume and location, surgery, RT and chemotherapy.…”
