Triethylphosphite as a network forming agent enhances in vitro biocompatibility and corrosion protection of hybrid organic–inorganic sol–gel coatings for Ti6Al4V alloys

Abstract: Introduction of phosphorous into hybrid silica sol–gel coatings on Ti6Al4V gives materials demonstrating higher levels of intermolecular condensation and fibrinogen uptake as well as improved in vitro biocompatibility and corrosion protection.

“…A promising research line consists in introducing phosphorus precursors into organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel coatings. In this way, El Hadad et al have introduced triethylphosphite in sol-gel coatings based on mixtures of γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane and tetramethylorthosilicate, not just for improving the corrosion protection properties of the coatings but also their biocompatibility [38].…”

“…These impedance spectra can be ascribed to the typical behavior of porous thin ilms deposited on metal substrates with high corrosion resistance [21,31,32,46,47]. In the irst approach, the single electrical equivalent circuit EEC1 shown in Figure 10a can be used to describe the electrochemical behavior of these systems.…”
