Triboluminescence and crystal structure of the complex [Eu(NО3)3(HMPA)3]: role of cleavage planes

Abstract: The atomic structure of crystals of the [Eu(NО ) (HMPA) ] [hexamethylphosphotriamide (HMPA)] complex characterized by an intensive luminescence and triboluminescence was determined using X-ray structural analysis. Noncentrosymmetric crystals have a monoclinic syngony: a = 16.0686 (3), b = 11.0853 (2), c = 20.9655 Å (4), β = 93.232° (1), space group P2 , Z = 4, ρ = 1.560 g/cm The crystal structure is represented by individual С Н EuN O P complexes linked through van der Waals interactions with clearly expressed… Show more

“…39 Moreover, the role of the cleavage planes at crystal destruction in the formation of TL properties was discussed. [61][62][63][64] Among the CPs obtained, 1 and 2 crystallizing in the centrosymmetric space group exhibit the brightest TL, and their TL activity is observed even in daylight (Table 2, ESI † Video). CPs 3 and 5 exhibit TL only in the dark, while 4 and 6 show no visible TL.…”

“…The unit layers of repeatability in the structure of the compound I multiplied in the direction [110] form a somewhat enlarged and relatively "free" space between themselves (destruction zone) [18][19][20][21], which can be conditionally considered as a cleavage area in the crystal, along which cracking will proceed during its destruction under mechanical impact. The unit layers are arranged in a three-dimensional framework by the impact of van der Waals interactions, as well as by hydrogen bonds N(1)-H(1)...O( 1).…”

“…Only a limited number of tetrakis [Ln(TTA)4] complexes (TTA -thenoyltri uoroacetonate-ion) with outer -sphere organic cations have been probed with respect to their TBL properties [4,18,26]. In continuation of our works on revealing structural aspects of the formation of triboluminescent properties [18][19][20][21], the present work is devoted to study of the crystal structure and photoluminescent (PL) and triboluminescent properties of the novel complex Q[Eu(ТТА)4]•H2O (I), where TTA is the thenoyltri uoroacetonate ion, Q -the cation 2-((E) -1 (2thenoyl)ethylidene) -1-hydrazonium carboxymidoamide (I) (Sheme).…”

“…The authors of [18][19][20][21] noted that the TBL properties of crystals were determined by the following structural features of the compound: 1) the presence of cleavage planes, along which a crystal cracks, 2) the exit of the charge-carrying structural elements of the compound to the crystal destruction zone.…”
