Tribological properties of Al 7075 alloy and Al 7075 metal matrix composite reinforced with SiC, sliding under dry, oil lubricated, and inert gas environments

Abstract: Tribological properties of silicon carbide-based aluminum metal matrix composite and aluminum matrix alloy have been studied for various sliding speeds of 3.14 and 3.77 m/s and load range from 10 to 30 N under dry, lubricated, and inert gas (argon) environment. Pin-on-disk tribometer were used for experiments. The composite was fabricated by stir casting route by using aluminum 7075 alloy as the matrix and 10% by weight silicon carbide as reinforced material. Results have revealed that the value of coefficient… Show more

“…These wear damages are usually in the form of micro-cracks or localized plastic deformation. Adhesive wear, abrasion wear, surface fatigue wear and corrosive wear are the types of wear possible [13]. The apparatus commonly used for measuring sliding friction and wear characteristics are Pin-on-Disc, Pin-on-Flat, Pin-on Cylinder, thrust washers, Pin-into-Bushing, Rectangular Flats on a Rotating Cylinder [13].…”

“…Shrivastava1 et al investigated on the tribological properties of silicon carbide-based aluminium metal network composite and aluminium lattice compound have been read for different sliding velocities of 3.14 and 3.77 m/s and load extend from 10 to 30N under dry, greased up, and idle gas (argon) condition [13]. Nail to circle tribometer were utilized for tests.…”

“…The surfactants are used to avoid the agglomeration of nanoparticles and to enhance the thermal stability of nanofluids (Das et al, 2017;Tiara et al, 2017). Furthermore, the thin lubricating film between moving surfaces contains nanoparticles that are broken in smaller particles and reorient themselves at high load and temperature condition and reduces the coefficient of friction (Shrivastava et al, 2017). In another study of (Cong Mao et al, 2014), the addition of Al2O3 nanoparticles in deionized water reduced the friction coefficient by 34.20% and worn out the weight of the workpiece by 43.40% as compared to pure deionized water.…”
