In this paper, either graphite (Gr) or carbon nanotubes (CNTs), or both of them were incorporated into carbon fabric reinforced phenolic (CFRP) composites, preparing by a dip-coating and heat molding process, the tribological properties of the resulting composites were investigated using a block-on-ring arrangement. The worn surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscope to understand the mechanism. Experimental results showed that the optimal Gr was more beneficial than CNTs in improving the tribological properties of the CFRP composites when they were singly incorporated. It is well worth noting that the friction and wear behavior of the CNTs-filled CFRP composites were improved further when Gr was added, indicating that there is a synergistic effect between them. Tribological tests under different sliding conditions revealed that the Gr and CNTs-filled CFRP composites seemed to be the most suitable for tribological applications under higher sliding speed and load, and oil lubrication.

The present study focuses on the effect of moisture uptake of jute/epoxy, hemp/epoxy, flax/epoxy and hybrid composites (jute/hemp/epoxy, hemp/flax/epoxy and jute/hemp/flax/epoxy) on the dynamic mechanical and tribological properties. Composite specimens were developed using hand lay-up compression technique. The developed composites were dipped in normal tap water at room temperature for the span of one year. Three parameters were used to analyze the results of dynamic mechanical analysis (damping capability, storage modulus and loss modulus), and three parameters (friction force, coefficient of friction and specific wear rate) were used to analyze the wear test results. Results of dynamic mechanical analysis and wear analysis after one year of moisture absorption were compared with already published results for specimens without moisture absorption. Substantial changes were observed in each parameter of dynamic mechanical analysis and tribology test performed after one year of water immersion. Water-saturated hybrid composite jute/hemp/epoxy achieved highest reduction of 16.03% in damping capability as compared to its dry specimens. Water-immersed jute/epoxy composite achieved highest increment of 763.2% and 589.8% in the value of storage modulus and loss modulus, respectively, as compared to its dry specimen. Hybrid composite jute/hemp/flax/epoxy achieved the highest increment of 13.5% and 19.9% in the value of coefficient of friction as compared to its dry specimen at 3 and 5 m/s sliding speed, respectively. Water-immersed hemp/flax/epoxy achieved the highest increment of 228.9% and 51.56% in the value of specific wear rate at 1 and 3 m/s sliding speed, respectively, as compared to its dry specimen.

Green tribology is a new field of greatinterest to a large number of tribologists. This article reviews the latest advances in this area including energy conservation, emission reduction, super-low friction and super-low wear, wind turbines,smart coatings, and fundamentals. Moreover, an overview ofthe future development of green tribology is also presented. Ecological lubricants/fluidsRecently, Holmberg and coworkers [8] demonstrated the global impact of friction on energy consumption, environment and economy through two case studies on passenger cars and paper machines [9, 10]. The authors showed the amount of energy lost to overcome friction and how to improve the energy efficiency of mechanical systems. They concluded that the global fleet of passenger cars used 33% of their total fuel energy annually to overcome friction, and the paper machines on aglobal level used 9.2% of the total energy annually and 32% of the electrical energy of the paper machines to overcome friction. In total, 100 million TJ/a is annually consumed to overcome friction worldwide, which is contributing to the global emission with 7000 million tones of CO 2 annually.Low-dimensional nano-materials with self-lubricating capability (such as MoS 2 , WS 2 , graphite, carbon nanotubes and so on) might be considered as potential anti-friction and wear additives for future engine oil application, owing to their unique size, shape, chemistry and structure morphology. In 2013, Erdemir [11] reviewed the latest research trends in 0 to 3D selflubricating nano-materials as potential oil additives and their prospects for commercial applications. He concluded that self-lubricating nano-materials with 0 to 3D structural architectures may hold great promise for further enhancing the anti-friction, -wear, and -scuffing performance of future lubricating oils.Considering that the rare-earth fluoride in base oil has good extreme pressure, anti-wear and friction performance,the lanthanum fluoride (LaF 3 ), in particular, displayspromising applications as a lubrication additive.
