Tribological Behaviors of Graphene and Graphene Oxide as Water-Based Lubricant Additives for Magnesium Alloy/Steel Contacts

Abstract: The tribological behaviors of graphene and graphene oxide (GO) as water-based lubricant additives were evaluated by use of a reciprocating ball-on-plate tribometer for magnesium alloy-steel contacts. Three sets of test conditions were examined to investigate the effect of concentration, the capacity of carrying load and the endurance of the lubrication film, respectively. The results showed that the tribological behaviors of water can be improved by adding the appropriate graphene or GO. Compared with pure dei… Show more

“…However, the increase in the contact area was lower than that of the load. In comparison with previously reported carbon/graphene quantum dots [57][58][59], colloidal polystyrene-carbon nanotubes [60], and graphene oxides [61,62], BPQDs possess a much better loadsupporting capacity under identical experimental conditions, even when using a small additive c of 0.005 wt%. For comparison purposes, BP powder was also utilized as additive of the base liquid to further highlight the superior performance of BPQDs as additives.…”

“…When used as lubricant additives or solid lubricants, graphene and few-layer MoS 2 can improve the extreme pressure (highest load without seizure of the friction pairs) and reduce the friction of rubbing surfaces [ 16 , 17 ]. These excellent lubricating properties, including the anti-pressure effect and friction reduction effect, are usually attributed to the better mechanical properties of 2D materials than metal friction pairs [ 18 ].…”
