“…Of specific interest is the thistle tribe, Cardueae, one of the largest tribes of Asteraceae, with ∼2,500 species. Previous molecular studies have unanimously confirmed Cardueae as monophyletic (80,95,(98)(99)(100)(101). The tribe comprises roughly half of the invasive Asteraceae species in California, as well as many natives and endemics (102).…”

“…Sampling was based on previous systematics studies (80,83,101) to represent most of the genera and major clades of the tribe Cardueae. Plant material was collected both from the field and herbarium specimens.…”

“…In this classification, Xeranthemum species have been defined into the subtribe Carduinae as sister to the rest of this subtribe (Susanna et al, 2006). In previous studies Xeranthemum species were included in the subtribe Echinopsidinae after a combined nuclear and chloroplast DNA analysis by Garcia-Jacas et al (2002), whereas Bremer (1994) classified them as being in the subtribe Carlininae due to their morphological characters. Indeed, in the phenogram ( Figure 6), which was constructed based on absence/presence, type, and length of the crystals in the species, X. annuum including the styloids in ovary cells is distinctly separated from the rest of the species of the subtribe Carduinae which has prismatics in its ovary cells.…”

“…The combined analysis of the nrONA region ITS and the chloroplast ONA gene marK has pro ven an excellent tool for unravelling problems at this level in lhe Cardueae (GARCIA-JACAS et aL, 2001, 2002. Thereafter, \Ve have carried out a molecular survey of bolh regions in a sample of aH lhe genera of lhe ArctiulII group \Vith the following goals: 1) To verify lhe monophyly of the ArctiuIIl group 2) To establish the generic boundaries of Arcl;ulII and CO/lsi/l;a 3) To compare nuelear ribosomal and chloroplasl DNA phylogeny and lhe evolulion of lhe palien types, basic chromosome numbers and lTlorphology in lhe group 4) To contribute with a preliminary study lO lhe infrageneric classificalion of the genus COllS;ll;a.…”
