Trial production of fuel pellet from Acacia mangium bark waste biomass

Abstract: Fuel pellet is one of the innovation products that can be produced from various sources of biomass such as agricultural residues, forestry and also wood industries including wood bark. Herein this paper, the potential fuel pellet production using Acacia mangium bark that abundant wasted from chip mill industry was studied. Fuel pellet was produced using a modified animal feed pellet press machine equipped with rotating roller-cylinders. The international standards quality of fuel pellet such as ONORM (Austria)… Show more

“…The values of volatile material for barked and debarked sawdust were found to be in the range of 82% to 91% (Figure 4), and they were similar to values reported by different authors [6,75,[80][81][82][83]. Values below the average reported here were found by Forero-Núñez et al [84] (76.82%) and Demirbas [85] (66.6%).…”

“…Therefore, it is the most important parameter in terms of potential energy, because high fixed carbon contents are associated with high caloric powers [84]. On the other hand, low fixed carbon values are attributed to high ash contents [80]. Therefore, while the bark contains less volatile matter and a higher percentage of fixed carbon, higher calorific values would be expected in bark than in wood [86], which is consistent with the values reported here.…”

“…The advantage of biomass pellets is that they produce low emissions [29], [33], [34] because biomass is carbon neutral, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and has low ash and sulfur content. Indonesia has also started to support the development of biomass pellets to be applied in the industry as a substitute for coal (cofiring) and households as an alternative to LPG [35]. Paper is a flammable material, which indicates that paper has high energy value [36].…”

“…Garden waste is biomass that has high cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin content. The lignin content can be a natural adhesive, increasing pellet density and calorific value [35]. Paper waste is also made of wood components, so that it has almost the same characteristics as wood which contains cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin fibers.…”
