“…There are many problems associated with these early measurements, and pre-industrial ozone levels may have been closer to 20 ppbv as measured at Arosa in the 1950s (Staehelin et al, 1994). Studies of ozone-sonde data in the free troposphere (Logan, 1994;Logan et al, 1999;Oltmans et al, 1998) point to a general increase in free tropospheric ozone up to the mid 1980s, and then a mixed picture with many sites/regions showing no significant trend, or even negative trends, after that. In WMO (2002) trends have been calculated including 4 more years (1996)(1997)(1998)(1999)(2000), but these additional 4 years did not alter the conclusions significantly.…”

“…Jacob et al [1999] projected that industrialization of eastern Asia would increase mean surface O3 concentrations over the United States by 2-6 ppbv over the 1985-2010 period, significantly offsetting the benefits of domestic emission controls. Observations at Whiteface Mountain (1480 m) in New York State indicate an increase of 4±2 ppbv over the period 1974-1995[Oltmans et al, 1998. Ozonesonde data in the free troposphere at Wallops Island (Virginia) and Boulder (Colorado) show no significant increase over the past two decades but the data are sparse [Oltmans et al, 1998;Logan et al, 1999].…”

“…A comparison of slopes of the regression lines enables to infer temporal variations of the long-term trend in last decades. Recently a concept of trend evaluation using a smooth curve fit to the ozone data has been evolving (Harris et al, 2003;Krzyƛcin et al, 2005;Oltmans et al, 2006;and Krzyƛcin, 2006). The trend means continuing and smooth change over a given time period.…”
