Trends in summer extreme temperatures over the Iberian Peninsula using nonurban station data

Abstract: [1] Heat wave event trends over the Iberian Peninsula (IP) are studied using extreme value theory, specifically the peaks-over-threshold (POT) approach. Summer (June-August) daily temperature records from 20 observatories regularly distributed over Iberia in places far from urban effects were available for the common period 1961-2010. Heat waves are defined as days occurring above the 95th percentile of the temperature distribution, considering both maximum (T max ) and minimum (T min ) temperatures. These eve… Show more

“…Average trend values of up to +0.7°C per decade in summer daily maximum temperature reported previously (Acero et al. ) closely match the estimated mean increase of +0.05°C per year found in this study for the Pozo Alzón weather station over 2000–2017.…”

“…This coincides with the results of several earlier studies on climate change in the Mediterranean basin [2][3][4][5][6][7], which forecasted an increase in temperatures [8][9][10][11][12][13] and a reduction in summer precipitation, with concomitant increases in potential evapotranspiration (ET) and water deficit [14][15][16][17][18]. In this regard, the projections of mean atmospheric temperature and precipitation during the 21st century indicate that ecological, economic, and social disruptions are likely to occur in the future, with a drier soil and higher warming over the Mediterranean area within the summer season [19,20].…”

“…Extreme value theory (EVT) provides the statistical basis for increasingly widespread quantitative investigations of extremes in climate studies (Coles, 2001;Zhang et al, 2004;Brown et al, 2008;Faranda et al, 2011;Acero et al, 2014). The peaks over threshold (POT) approach aims to describe the distribution of the exceedances of the stochastic variable of interest above a threshold.…”
