Trends in H2S-Donors Chemistry and Their Effects in Cardiovascular Diseases

Abstract: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an endogenous gasotransmitter recently emerged as an important regulatory mediator of numerous human cell functions in health and in disease. In fact, much evidence has suggested that hydrogen sulfide plays a significant role in many physio-pathological processes, such as inflammation, oxidation, neurophysiology, ion channels regulation, cardiovascular protection, endocrine regulation, and tumor progression. Considering the plethora of physiological effects of this gasotransmitter, th… Show more

“…The involvement of H 2 S in the cardiovascular system is due to its role as a blood pressure and heart rate regulator, an activator of angiogenesis, and a basal vasorelaxant agent. Furthermore, it has been proven that antioxidation, the inhibition of cell apoptosis, pro-angiogenesis, the anti-inflammatory effect, and the regulation of ion channels represent the mechanisms of action that lead to cardioprotective activity [ 95 ].…”

“…Therefore, forerunners for H 2 S endogenous synthesis, H 2 S donors, and natural plant-derivative compounds may serve as strategies to prevent hypertension and kidney disease [ 94 ]. Corvino et al recently reported a survey of currently available H 2 S donors and their effects on cardiovascular disease; these H 2 S donors have been described as the basis of the mechanism that triggers the release of H 2 S and underline their possible use as favorable drugs in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases [ 95 ].…”

“…Other naturally occurring H 2 S donors such as garlic-derived compounds or isothiocyanates present in vegetables also demonstrated cardioprotective effects [ 176 ]. Allicin, a garlic-derived H 2 S donor, is known for lowering arterial blood pressure, among other cardiovascular protection systems [ 177 ].…”

“…Exogenously added and endogenously produced hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) influences many physiological and pathologic processes, including oxidative stress, by reacting with reactive oxygen species [ 16 , 17 ]. Organoselenium compounds have been known to serve as multifunctional agents.…”
