Trench investigations of the 1915 Fucino earthquake fault scarps (Abruzzo, central Italy): Geological evidence of large historical events

Abstract: Earthquake hazard analyses in Italy are mainly based on historical seismic catalogs. However, the completeness of the Italian catalog, which spans more than 2000 years, progressively decreases going back in time. In the Fucino basin, historical research has not produced evidence of large earthquakes before the January 13, 1915, event (M•. = 7.0; 33,000 people killed). Focal mechanism solutions place the T axis in the E‐W [ Gasparini et al , 1985] to NNE‐SSE directions [ Basili and Valensise , 1991], consistent with oblique extension, while trench investigations documented pure dip‐slip motion of this fault during the 1915 rupture [ Micchetti et al , 1996].
