Pinus sylvestris L. (Scots pine) is the main forest tree species in Burabai National Park. Trees here grow under continental climate conditions. There are no dendroclimatological studies based on Scots pine of this region. The purpose of this study was to find the relationships between tree-ring widths and climate. For this purpose, a total of 176 cores from 100 Scots pine trees were collected. After measuring tree-ring widths, standard chronology building methods were used, and three site chronologies were constructed. Correlation coefficients between tree-ring widths with temperature and precipitation were calculated. Precipitation from October of the previous year to July of current year had a positive influence on tree-ring widths and August-September precipitation have the opposite effect. Temperature in the winter had positive effect for tree-ring growth but significantly negative during summer. Effects of climate changes on tree-ring widths were observed. The variation and sensitivity of tree-ring widths increased after 1940s. An increasing trend in precipitation, temperature, and tree-ring widths were clearly observed. In conclusion, tree-rings of Scots pine in Burabai are highly sensitive to growing site conditions and are affected by climate changes.

Dendroclimatology in the Eastern Mediterranean (EM) region has made important contributions to the understanding of climate variability on timescales of decades to centuries. These contributions, beginning in the mid-20th century, have value for resource management, archaeology, and climatology. A gradually expanding treering network developed by the first author over the past 15 years has been the framework for some of the most important recent advances in EM dendroclimatology. The network, now consisting of 79 sites, has been widely applied in large-scale climatic reconstruction and in helping to identify drivers of climatic variation on regional to global spatial scales. This article reviews EM dendroclimatology and highlights contributions on the national and international scale.

Concurrent reconstructions of October-April precipitation at Madaba and Rabba gauging sites in central Jordan back to the year 1777 using a multivariate regression model are presented. The reconstruction model was calibrated using concurrent precipitation and tree-ring data for the period 1953-1981 The regression equation is significant (p < 0.05), while reconstructions account for 53% and 48% (adjusted for lost degrees of freedom) of the total variability of the precipitation at the Madaba and Rabba sites, respectively. The validation statistic obtained indicates the existence of worthwhile information in the reconstructions. A threshold of 1 standard deviation below the mean is used to define extremely dry years. The concurrent analysis of the reconstructed precipitation at both sites indicates the occurrence of 24 regional extremely dry periods of between 1 and 2 years' duration. Dry periods of more than 2 years' duration rarely occur. This study indicates the occurrence of noticeable extremely dry individual years: 1800, 1827, 1895 and 1933. The estimated mean recurrence times of extreme droughts are 9.3 and 51.3 years for droughts of 1-year and 2-years duration, respectively.
