Tree‐ring reconstructions of precipitation and streamflow for north‐western Turkey

Abstract: ABSTRACT:We describe tree-ring reconstructions of spring (May-June) precipitation and spring-summer (May-August) streamflow for north-western Turkey, both beginning in AD 1650. These are among the first such reconstructions for the region, and the streamflow reconstruction is among the first of its kind for Turkey and the entire Middle East. The reconstructions, which both emphasize high-frequency variations, account for 34 and 53% of their respective instrumental variance. Comparison to precipitation and runo… Show more

“…Rigling et al (2001) stated that the sensitivity of the treering chronologies ranges 0.18-0.33 in Swiss stands, 0.29-0.52 in Russian stands on shallow soils on solid rocks and 0.17-0.22 in sand dunes, and 0.21-0.25 in south-central Siberia . It is 0.22-0.23 in the west Black Sea region of Turkey (Akkemik et al, 2008). The sensitivity of the site chronologies in the study sites is at a medium level.…”

“…Using tree-ring data from living-tree and archaeological samples, Akkemik et al (2008) developed the first precipitation and streamflow reconstruction for northwestern Turkey. The streamflow reconstruction was for the Filyos River, near the western Black Sea.…”

“…Additional validation of the reconstruction was obtained by comparing the recorded and estimated extremely dry years. Extremely dry years are defined as years of precipitation lower than the threshold of one standard deviation (SD) below the long-term mean (Akkemik et al, , 2008. Figure 3 shows that, during the period 1953-1981, 67% (two-thirds) of extremely dry years in the actual and reconstructed October-April precipitation were found to agree in both sites.…”

“…In the literature, several recent dendroclimatological studies have focused on analysing droughts in the eastern Mediterranean (e.g. Akkemik, 2000;Touchan et al, 2003Touchan et al, , 2005Touchan et al, , 2007Akkemik et al, , 2008; however, few studies have considered the analysis of droughts in the region of Jordan (e.g. Touchan et al, 1999).…”
