Tree-Ring Indicators of Fire in Two Old-Growth Coast Redwood Forests

Abstract: Fires that burn through forests cause changes in wood anatomy and growth that can be used to reconstruct fire histories. Fire is important in Sequoia sempervirens (D. Don) Endl.

“…(i) For Juniperus, the geographical ranges correspond to the 13 polyploid species and not to all species of this genus. The distribution range of the only hexaploid in this genus, J. foetidissima is represented by the symbol “X.” (ii) The distribution ranges do not represent the exact distribution of the studied polyploid populations in this work but the full distribution range of the polyploid species, following Farjon et al, 2002; Premoli et al, 2003; Adams, 2014; Carroll et al, 2018; Farhat et al, 2019a, 2019b, 2020). “…The history of natural fire in the coast redwood forest has been one of predominantly infrequent and low severity disturbance [9,10]. Natural ignitions occur from lightning strikes, and storms generally occur during the rainy season when fuels have high relative humidity.…”
