Background/Aims: Evidence mapping of systematic reviews (SRs) systematically and comprehensively identifies, organizes, and summarizes the distribution of scientific evidence in a field. The aims of this study were to delineate domains in dental traumatology (DT), evaluate the existing SRs within the domains, and identify the paucity of evidence for future research. Methods: Domains and sub-domains of DT were established according to the methods of qualitative research. The protocol for evidence mapping was prepared as per the guidelines of GEM and PRISMA. The search strategy was formulated using words and MeSH terms in eight databases without restriction of languages and year of publication. Gray literature, protocol registries, and references of selected articles were also searched. Duplicates were removed, and the final selection of SRs was completed. Data extraction and quality analysis using the ROBIS tool and the PRISMA checklist were performed. Results: The overall search resulted in 64 SRs from 1999 to 2020 with 44 published in last six years. The highest number of SRs had been performed in the Prognostic domain (n = 19) followed by the domains of Epidemiology (n = 15), Therapeutics (n = 10), Oral Biology (n = 7), Diagnostics (n = 6), Preventive (n = 5), and Research Methods (n = 2). Within each domain, there were variabilities in the number of reviewers, a priori protocols, search limitations, risk of bias methods, and meta-analysis. Of the SRs, including 4 Cochrane reviews, 28.4% were inconclusive. A low risk of bias was found in 48.4% of the SRs. Among the registered and ongoing SRs, six were from the domain of epidemiology, two in the domain of therapeutics, five from prognostics, and one each in the domains of prevention and research methods. Conclusion: The SRs in DT could be mapped in seven domains with variabilities in the methods. The majority had an a priori registered protocol and a low risk of reporting errors. Within the Epidemiology and Preventive domains, SRs were present in all the sub-domains with the majority demonstrating low-risk of bias (ROB). Intrusive dislocation is an unusual and severe trauma, where the tooth is displaced axially into the alveolar bone, causing damage to the periodontal and pulpal tissues. The objective was to report a case of intrusive dislocation on a right maxillary central incisor of a 12-year-old patient, where the proposed treatment was immediate surgical repositioning. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed partial tooth intrusion and complete root formation. The impacted tooth was surgically repositioned and immobilized. Subsequently, the endodontic treatment of the tooth associated with intracanal medication was performed. After 10 months of successive calcium hydroxide changes, the root canal system was filled. Clinical-radiographic follow-ups were performed over 5 years and 7 months, revealing discrete root resorption. It was concluded that immediate surgical repositioning, associated with adequate root canal therapy may be an effective therapeutic option in cases of intrusive dislocation of permanent teeth.

Background/Aims Traumatic dental injuries (TDI) are a public health concern with high prevalence and recurrence rate. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta‐analysis to determine whether previous dental trauma is a predictive factor for new episodes of TDI (recurrence or first episodes). Materials and Methods Electronic searches were performed with no language or date restrictions. According to the PECOS strategy, cohort studies that investigated subjects with and without previous TDI, and its association with new TDI episodes, as primary or secondary outcomes, were included. Quality assessment and bias control were carried out according to Fowkes and Fulton guidelines. A meta‐analysis was performed by sub‐grouping studies into deciduous and permanent dentition, and the risk ratio (RR) was also calculated (P ≤ 0.05). The evidence was quality‐tested using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. Results After titles and abstracts were examined, and full texts were read, five studies were included in this systematic review. Four studies had high methodological quality, and one presented a risk of bias on confounding factors. No association and a positive association were determined between previous history of TDI and new episodes of TDI in the primary (RR 1.26 [0.99, 1.62], P = 0.06) and in the permanent dentitions (RR 2.68 [1.20, 4.19], I2 = 37%, P < 0.00001), respectively. The pooled results demonstrated a positive association (P < 0.00001) between previous dental trauma and new episodes of TDI (RR 2.17 [1.20, 3.90], P = 0.01, I2 = 83%) with moderate evidence quality level. Conclusions Individuals that have suffered previous TDI present a greater risk of suffering new episodes of TDI.
