Treatment programmes for adolescents who commit sexual offences: Dropout and recidivism

Abstract: This paper reviews the state of research into treatment programmes for adolescent sexual offenders, focusing first on treatment dropout, then on recidivism studies. Pre-treatment variables, which may predict dropout from programmes for these adolescents, have hardly been considered, despite obvious financial and ethical implications. In relation to recidivism studies, these have been carried out quite consistently since the mid 1980s, yet, as is discussed, they still suffer from many methodological problems. T… Show more

“…Furthermore, a later study by Kraemer, Salisbury, and Spielman (1998) suggested impulsivity as one of the predictors of program drop-out. However, their definition of impulsivity referred to antisocial characteristics and infractions that the authors believed to be suggestive of impulsivity rather than to a direct evaluation of impulsive behaviour (Edwards and Beech 2004). Shorts (1998) found that learning and cognitive difficulties (general learning ability, verbal, numerical, and spatial aptitudes) strongly predicted program dropout, with completers displaying higher levels of functioning.…”
