Treatment of unknown primary melanoma

Abstract: Sixty‐four patients with unknown primary melanoma were identified among 1045 new patients with melanoma (6%) seen during an 11‐year period. Their mean age was 44.5 years (median age, 42.7 years). Of these, 39 (59%) were men, and 25 (38%) were women. In 34, only one site was involved. Common single sites were the axilla (29%), groin (24%), and neck (32%). Most of the melanomas (88%) were melanotic. Patients with localized melanoma surgically treated (n = 34) had a median survival of 53 months, and a 5‐year surv… Show more

“…This percentage is in agreement with that reported by other studies [3][4][5][6], although the incidence of unknown primary is estimated to be approximately 8-9% by authors that take into account only patients with lymph node involvement [7,16]. In our experience, in agreement with the majority of published series [3,4,17,18], patients with unknown primary were predominantly middle-aged males. In almost half of the cases, the first site of presentation was a lymph nodal mass, but also cutaneous or subcutaneous localizations were frequent; on the contrary, visceral metastases were found at diagnosis in only 18% of patients.…”

“…Metastatic melanoma with an unknown primary is a rare lesion and the incidence has been variously reported between 2-10% [2,3]. Metastatic deposits to various sites have been reported including sites like the brain and lymph nodes [3][4][5].…”

“…Metastatic deposits to various sites have been reported including sites like the brain and lymph nodes [3][4][5]. The prognosis of this condition is still controversial, although studies indicate that there is no difference in prognosis when compared to cases where the primary tumour has been identified [2].…”

“…Os melanomas primários de órbita são extremamente raros pois a órbita é desprovida de melanócitos (2)(3)(4)(5) . Dessa maneira os melanomas orbitários são, em sua grande maioria, secundários a melanomas uveais ou conjuntivais (2,6) .…”
