Treatment of Solitary Enchondromas in Fingers

Abstract: The results after operative treatment of 21 solitary enchondromas of finger bones are described. 15 cases were treated by curettage and cancellous bone grafting, five by curettage alone, and one with amputation. One case did not heal after curettage and grafting. When symptoms are present or the cortical strength is decreased, we recommend operation. We find that the eccentric type of enchondroma can be treated adequately by curettage alone, while curettage and filling of the cavity with cancellous bone should… Show more

“…Generally surgical therapy may become necessary if a pathological fracture occurs. Curettage of the lesion and filling of the defect with autologous bone grafting or supplementation with substitutes are regarded as the treatment of choice (10,11). Surgical therapy often can be avoided if the diagnostic imaging suggests a benign unremarkable lesion with normal follow-up.…”

“…Curettage followed by augmentation of the void defect is the mainstay of surgical treatment for enchondroma. There are numerous ways to fill the void defect, including autologous bone grafting, which has been known as the standard treatment option [6][7][8][9][10]. This is performed using bone graft substitutes such as calcium phosphate cement or plaster of Paris, etc.…”
