Treatment of pseudo Class III malocclusion by modified Hawleys appliance with inverted labial bow

Abstract: Pseudo Class III malocclusion is characterized by an anterior crossbite with functional forward mandibular displacement. Various appliances have been devised for early treatment of a pseudo Class III. The aim of this article is to highlight the method of construction and use a simple removable appliance termed as "Modified Hawleys appliance with inverted labial bow" to treat psuedo class III malocclusion in the mixed dentition period. It also emphasizes the importance of differentiating between true Class III … Show more

“…Conversely, in true mesiocclusion, the maneuver does not succeed. The mandible cannot be retruded, and there is no modification of the dental reports [1,15]. When the anterior crossbite exhibit a functional shift; that is, interincisal contact is possible in centric relationship, implying a pseudo Class III malocclusion with no inherent skeletal Class III discrepancy [8].…”

“…Class III malocclusion characterized by an anterior crossbite2,3 exhibits potential problems associated with esthetics, absence of centric contact on anterior teeth, lack of anterior guidance and in those patients the function is limited to vertical movements and they have a vertical function pattern 3. In addition clinically, these patients exhibit concave facial profile, retrusive nasomaxilla, remarkable lower third of the face and protruded lower lip respect to the upper lip 4…”

“…Important consideration that should be made regards to restorative treatment of Class III malocclusion is the possibility of increasing the vertical dimension 2,3. Increasing of occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) should be within the range of neuromuscular adaptation 7.…”
