“…Scarff would continue to use this design for nearly 30 years, with the only modification being a conversion to a fiberoptic light in 1963. 13,22,23 William McNickle would make one of the final advancements in performing the third ventriculostomy in 1947, 14 before a period of relative silence that fell in concert with the arrival of valved shunts. 24 McNickle described a method of percutaneous ventricular puncture; more importantly, he noted that "In the past, third ventriculostomy has been reserved for cases of non-communicating hydrocephalus.… The division of hydrocephalus into communicating and non-communicating types is an arbitrary one, and has been over-emphasized."…”

“…Veamos cuales son los resultados clínicos obtenidos en los pacientes desde el punto de vista neurológico y social. Scarff 60 encontro que 4 casos de su serie original de 20, tenían una inteligência normal ocho meses a cuatro anos después de la operación; otro paciente que se presumia normal murió cinco anos después de la operación. Putnam 49 hace énfasis en !a influencia dei estado mental preoperatorio sobre el resultado y el estado dei paciente después de la operación.…”

“…The question was whether an ETV performed at the floor of the third ventricle, directly connecting the ventricles with the subarachnoid space and bypassing the posterior fossa, could avoid shunting in obstructive hydrocephalus. This technique was already known from the work of Dandy, 5 Mixter, 36 and Scarff 43,44 at the very beginning of neurosurgery in the 20th century. Particularly because of a very high complication rate and a high mortality rate, the ETV technique was given up after the introduction of valve-based shunt systems to the clinical routine.…”
