Treatment of homosexual and heterosexual sexual dysfunction in male-only groups of mixed sexual orientation

Abstract: Males complaining of erectile and ejaculatory dysfunctions were treated in a structured therapy program. Twenty-one males of heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual orientation were divided into five groups, with two male therapists for each group. Patients were those usually considered difficult to treat in that 16 had a primary sexual dysfunction with an average duration of 6 years. Extensive evaluations were made before therapy, at the completion of therapy, and at 2-months follow-up. Pre-therapeutic, post-th… Show more

“…As noted in Sandfort and de Keizer's (2001) review, past studies of sexual dysfunction among gay/bisexual men lack strong empiricism, have variations in sample size and composition, and use varying methodological approaches (e.g., Everaerd et al, 1982;McWhirter & Mattison, 1984;Paff, 1985;Reece, 1982). Consequently, summarizing the literature is difficult.…”

“…The authors recommended a stronger social skills component during therapy, plus possible special social skills training before the commencement of treatment for those identified as having particular diaculties. Everaerd et al (1982) postulated that results are achievable in those without partners firstly if each parmer knows the conditions conducive to his or her sexual excitement, which could be learned through masturbation, and secondly if he or she can achieve these in interaction, aided by social skills training. Eighteen to twenty-one two hour group sessions were held with twenty-one men, eighteen of whom had no regular parmer.…”

“…Unfortunately, quantitative research in the area of LGB groups is scant and narrowly focused. A thorough literature search uncovered only six quantitative, empirical studies of LGBs (Everaerd et al, 1982;Hedge & Glover, 1990;Mulder et al, 1994;Quadland, 1985;Reece, 1981Reece, /1982Russell & Winkler, 1977). Of these six, only two were published in the past decade, three dealt specifically with sexual dysfunction, and two dealt with issues related to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).…”

“…It is widely recognized that role models provide an important ingredient in effective counseling and that LGB people frequently lack positive role models (Rochlin, 1994). The unique benefit offered by LGB therapists and counselors is that they can serve as positive and strong role models to group members (Conlin & Smith, 1981/1982). In addition, having two…”
