Treatment of fibrosarcoma in a horse

Abstract: Summary A surgically excised tumour from the thoracic wall of a hunter mare was diagnosed as a fibrosarcoma on histological examination. Its recurrence necessitated further surgery 6 weeks later. Because of the invasive nature of the lesion a prolonged course of chemotherapy was administered postoperatively. The tumour did not recur a second time. Résumé On diagnostiqua par l'histologie qu'une tumeur excisée de la paroi thoracique d'une jument de selle était un fibrosarcome. “…In smalla nimals, adjunct therapy mayi nclude radiation, chemotherapyand immunotherapy (11). There arereports of chemotherapeutics andr adiation therapy for some tumour types in the horse (16,(20)(21)(22)(23), however, the expenseand difficultieso fa dministration of theset herapies maketheminaccessiblefor most equine patients.Additionally, amputation is not areasonableo ption for equine patients.I nt he currentc ase, the successful outcome may indicatel ong-termr esolutiono fc linical signs is possiblewithout the benefitofwide dissection margins during surgical excision. This maysuggest thatthe biological behaviour of fibrosarcoma is different in horses thani no thers pecies.…”

“…Fibrosarcomas are found most often in dogs and cats, although they do occur in all species, including man. The cutaneous form in equidae has been described (REINERTSON, 1974;RIGGOTT and QUARMBY, 1980;PULLEY and STANNARD, 1990;JONES et al, 1997) and is considered to be rare. COTCHIN (1977) reported that x 3 YO of all neoplasms in horses are fibrosarcomas.…”
