Treatment of digit ulcers in a patient with Buerger's disease by using cervical spinal cord stimulation -a case report-

Abstract: Buerger's disease (thromboangiitis obliterans) is known as a segmental inflammatory vasculitis that involves the small-sized and medium-sized arteries, veins, and nerves. Most effective treatment for Buerger's disease is smoking cessation. Except for the cessation of tobacco use, surgical revascularization is available in severe ischemia and a distal target vessel. Amputation has been used as the last treatment option of the disease up to the present. Increasing limb survival and decreasing amputation rate is … Show more

“…[34] There are also case reports of successful treatment of SCS in Burger's disease and Raynaud's disease. [35][36][37][38] In the follow-up of treatment in critical ischemic disease, many examinations showing perfusion have been identified. In addition to ankle brachial index (ABI) and transcutaneous oxygen tension (TcPO2), at previous studies MR angiography perfusion (MRAP), technetium-99m-labeled Methoxyisobutyl isonitrile (99mTc-MIBI) -single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and Thallium-201 (201T1) -SPECT were used to show microvasculer perfusion insufficiency in critical ischemic disease.…”

“…The absence of distal vascular targets makes surgical revascularization challenging. Endovascular treatment modalities have demonstrated utility lessening the progression of TAO [23]. In the setting of multi-level occlusion the stent puncture technique can help overcome vascular access challenges.…”

“…Electrical spinal cord stimulation ( 23) is an accepted therapeutic method because of its analgesic effects, the improvement of skin microcirculation in the treated area (13), and the healing of ulcers in severe peripheral atherosclerotic arterial disease (24). The mechanisms behind these effects are still unknown (6,19,23,(25)(26)(27)(28).…”
