Since chondrocyte hypertrophy greatly limits the efficiency of cartilage defects repairing via cartilage tissue engineering (CTE), it is critical to develop a functional CTE scaffold able to inhibit chondrocyte hypertrophy during this period of cartilage regeneration. In this study, we tested the applicability of using decellularized sturgeon cartilage ECM (dSCECM) scaffold to cease chondrocyte hypertrophy during cartilage damage repair. The dSCECM scaffolds with interconnected porous structure and pore size of 114.1 ± 20.9 μm were successfully prepared with freeze‐dry method. Chondrocytes displayed a round shape and aggregated to form cellular spheroids within dSCECM scaffolds, which is similar to their chondrocytic phenotype within cartilage in vivo. Higher transcriptional level of chondrogenic related genes and integrin related genes was observed in chondrocytes incubated with dSCECM scaffolds instead of type I collagen (COL I) scaffolds, which were used as the control due to their widely usage in CTE and clinic applications. Furthermore, it confirmed that, compared with COL I scaffolds, dSCECM scaffolds significantly reduced the transcription of chondrocyte hypertrophy related genes in chondrocytes following the hypertrophic induction treatment. To test the ability of dSCECM scaffold to inhibit chondrocytes hypertrophy in vivo, chondrocytes with dSCECM scaffolds and COL I scaffolds were cultured with hypertrophic media and were implanted into nude mice respectively. Following 4 weeks implantation, interestingly, only the specimens derived from COL I scaffolds displayed consequences of chondrocyte hypertrophy like calcification deposition, demonstrating that chondrocyte hypertrophy is ceased by the dSCECM scaffold following hypertrophic induction. It suggests that the dSCECM scaffold can be potentially applied in clinical treating cartilage defects via the CTE approach to avoid the risk of chondrocyte hypertrophy.

Introduction and importance Peripheral venous catheterizations in newborns are associated with complications such as infections, phlebitis, vessel rupture and drug leaks or serum. Extravasation injury refers to the leakage of injected drugs from blood vessels causing damage to the surrounding tissues, skin necrosis, and sometimes amputation. Using tilapia fish skin (TFS) is one of the new strategies that have been used in wound management. Case presentation This case is a 36-week- and 4-day-old male fetus with a birth weight of 1600 g, height of 40 cm, and head circumference of 31 cm who was born to a 25-year-old mother by cesarean section at Mahzad Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Urmia, Iran. On the third day of hospitalization at neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), an extravasation injury occurred in the infant's left hand in size approximately 1 × 1 cm by peripheral catheter. Despite extensive intravenous antibiotic therapy and rinsing with normal saline, wound healing was not achieved. The necrotic area was bandaged by using of the tilapia skin. For this purpose, the area was first washed with normal saline for 5 min and then the tilapia skin was placed on the damaged skin for 10 days. After a month, the newborn's wound had completely healed. Clinical discussion Infants are more prone to extravasation injury than adults due to being more sensitive and thinner peripheral vessel walls. Conclusion This case illustrates that tilapia fish skin may be a suitable alternative to other temporary skin cover dressings in premature newborns suffering from extravasation injury.

Um grande número de queimados é atendido todos os anos no Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), sendo tratados principalmente com creme de sulfadiazina de prata. Estudos mais recentes, porém, chamam a atenção para a proeminência de curativos biológicos, em especial xenoenxertos, no tratamento de queimaduras. A pele de tilápia-do-Nilo, recentemente, se tornou o primeiro xenoenxerto animal aprovado pela ANVISA no Brasil. O método utilizado neste estudo foi uma revisão integrativa de literatura, com o objetivo de compreender se há viabilidade no uso de xenoenxertos de pele de tilápia como curativo biológico para o tratamento de queimaduras, avaliando sua eficácia e segurança, conjecturando uma possível utilização em larga escala no SUS. Constatou-se, então, a segurança e aplicabilidade do curativo biológico de pele de tilápia como tratamento para queimaduras e, com o surgimento de novos estudos, a viabilidade de seu uso no SUS torna-se cada vez mais possível, já que certifica-se uma boa relação de custo-benefício.
