Treatment of severe extravasation injury in a newborn by using tilapia fish skin: A case report

Abstract: Introduction and importance Peripheral venous catheterizations in newborns are associated with complications such as infections, phlebitis, vessel rupture and drug leaks or serum. Extravasation injury refers to the leakage of injected drugs from blood vessels causing damage to the surrounding tissues, skin necrosis, and sometimes amputation. Using tilapia fish skin (TFS) is one of the new strategies that have been used in wound management. Case presentation This case is… Show more

“…Outcomes and consequences of care negligence could lead to hospitalization because of infection, which is called diabetic foot infection (DFI). If DFI remains untreated, a severe condition, such as septicemia, can threaten the patient, and even death of the affected person is feasible [6] . Hence, for managing and controlling DFI, a variety of methods and wound bandaging have been applied [12] .…”

“…The standard treatments for DFU include various local and systemic approaches, such as proper blood sugar maintenance, debridement of dead tissue, wet dressing, nutritional support, antibiotic therapy, and surgical amputation [3] . Innovative and modern methods to precipitate the process of wound healing are considering Maggot Debridement Therapy (MDT), Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT), Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), stem cell-based therapy, growth factor therapy, and therapeutic application of extracellular matrix protein [6] , [7] .…”

“…Phentolamine is a kind of alpha-receptor blocker, which can dilate blood vessels and improve blood circulation [11], while dopamine is a vasoconstrictor. An extravasation of dopamine can lead to vasoconstriction of extravasated skin tissue and skin tissue necrosis [12,13]. Phentolamine can antagonize the vasoconstriction of dopamine, dilating the blood vessels of local extravasated skin, improving blood circulation, and relieving pain, which is the only drug approved for vasopressin extravasation [14].…”
