Treatment of common ocular allergic disorders; a comparison of lodoxamide and NAAGA

Abstract: Background/aims-Lodoxamide tromethamine and N-acetyl-aspartyl glutamic acid (NAAGA) are mast cell stabilisers, both of which have been shown to be eVective in the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis. The aim of this study was to compare the two compounds in patients with common ocular allergic disorders. Methods-73 patients participated in a double masked, randomised multicentre study. Diagnoses were chronic allergic conjunctivitis, vernal conjunctivitis, seasonal and atopic conjunctivitis. 36 patients were t… Show more

“…NAAGA eye drops are currently marketed in several countries; they were approved in 1984 for treating moderate forms of allergic conjunctivitis. The efficacy and safety of NAAGA eye drops were previously demonstrated in patients with allergic conjunctivitis, including SAC 2–14 . SAC symptoms occur when pollen dissolves in the tear film, then crosses the conjunctiva 15 .…”

“…In less severe cases mast cell stabilisers such as disodium cromoglycate, N-acetyl aspartyl glutamic acid and lodoxamide trometamol 0.1% ophthalmic solution ('lodoxamide') may prevent inflammation. Lodoxamide is effective in various forms of non-infective allergic conjunctivitis (3)(4)(5). It has no intrinsic vasoconstrictor, antihistaminic, cyclooxygenase inhibitory, or other anti-inflammatory activity (6).…”
