Treatment and Posttreatment Effects of Fluoride Mouthrinsing after 17 Years

Abstract: Children who began rinsing at 4 or 5 years of age benefited the most from the program. The program was inexpensive, simple to implement and well accepted by families and teachers. The conservative treatment policy in the public clinic likely contributed to the benefits derived by participants.

“…The results for each tooth surface were recorded after a visual examination with a dental mirror and exploration using sunlight or a flashlight. The items examined included number of sealant-treated teeth, number of C 0 and C 1-4 teeth, teeth missing due to caries, and number of treated teeth (5,10,11). Sealant-treated/ resin-filled teeth and healthy teeth were identified using erythrosine staining.…”

“…In terms of limitations, the most difficult effort is how to evaluate the participation of subjects to the trials for years and how to deal to biases of unknown magnitude and direction [114][115][116][117][118]. It was suggested that the use of fluoridated mouthrinses may have quite a low statistic impact in today's oral health care, probably due to the high cost, but still its use could prove valid among high-risk population groups [105].…”

“…The effect of school-based FMR on the incidence of caries in children has been investigated during the past four decades in a large number of clinical trials. A caries decline of 20%~50% due to FMR has been reported [3][4][5][6][7] . A Cochrane review also concluded that the use of FMR by children is associated with a clear reduction in the caries increment.…”
