Treating skin cancer with topical cream

Abstract: Topical pharmacotherapy represents an option for treatment of actinic keratoses and selected basal cell carcinomas. Moreover, preliminary reports indicate imiquimod to be effective for skin or mucosal cancers such as Bowen's disease, erythroplasia of Queyrat and lentigo maligna.

“…E-selectin is a cell adhesion protein important for the extravasation of inflammatory cells, and may be important for enabling anti-tumour responses. Although these mechanisms have not been as extensively studied in actinic keratosis and superficial BCC, short-term clearance following imiquimod treatment has been demonstrated 199201 suggesting that in some circumstances, recruitment of an appropriate inflammatory response can result in tumour clearance. Intralesional IFN-α-2b, another immune agonist, also has activity against BCC and SCC 202,203 .…”

“…Consequentially, this has led to the development of a variety of pharmacologic alternatives, including topical therapies. In particular, topical pharmacotherapy is considered an interesting approach in selected skin alterations, being a noninvasive and selfadministered treatment, and, in particular, it represents a highly desirable alternative option in patients with lesions located on cosmetically sensitive areas (Micali et al, 2010). Celecoxib (CXB) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor.…”

“…Diagnosis of lentigo maligna (LM) on the face is often challenging because of the overlap of clinical and morphologic features with other lesions, such as solar lentigo, flat seborrheic keratosis, pigmented actinic keratosis and, less likely, pigmented basal cell carcinoma (BCC). 1,2 In recent years, topical treatment options [3][4][5][6][7][8] for many of these conditions have emerged, and are particularly helpful in treatment of facial lesions for cosmetic reasons. In view of this, there is an increasing demand for a noninvasive diagnostic aid for treatment management.…”
