Treating infections with ionizing radiation: a historical perspective and emerging techniques

Abstract: Background: Widespread use and misuse of antibiotics have led to a dramatic increase in the emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria, while the discovery and development of new antibiotics is declining. This has made certain implant-associated infections such as periprosthetic joint infections, where a biofilm is formed, very difficult to treat. Alternative treatment modalities are needed to treat these types of infections in the future. One candidate that has been used extensively in the past, is the use of… Show more

“…The mAbs were radiolabeled with 111 In and used in biodistribution and imaging experiments as described in [ 12 ]. IGF2R-Fab1 was conjugated with 10 M excess p-SCN-Bn-DOTA as in [ 12 ] and radiolabeled with 225 Ac for in vitro cell killing as in [ 22 ]. Briefly, 225 Ac chloride was diluted with 0.15 M NH 4 acetate buffer and added to the Fab1-DOTA conjugate in the same buffer in a volume of ~35 μL.…”

“…Another attractive field actually supporting a more integrated view of radiobiology is the use of TAT to overcome resistance to medications of fungal or bacterial infections (81)(82)(83)(84). Although bacteria do not present a nucleus as eukaryotic cancer cells, 213 Bi-MAb D11 directed against pneumococcal capsular polysaccharide 8 (PPS8) was able to efficiently kill Streptococcus pneumoniae in vitro and to reduce bacterial load in C57BL/6 mice (81).…”

“…HF not only causes serious physical and psychological impairment to sufferers, but it also places a financial strain on society as a whole ( 4 ). According to epidemiological statistics from Western nations, the 5-year death rate of HF is significantly greater than that of several cancers ( 5 ). In China, the prevalence of HF has grown sixfold in the last ten years.…”
