Short-term traffic forecasting is becoming more important in intelligent transportation systems. The k-nearest neighbours (kNN) method is widely used for short-term traffic forecasting. However, the self-adjustment of kNN parameters has been a problem due to dynamic traffic characteristics. This paper proposes a fully automatic dynamic procedure kNN (DP-kNN) that makes the kNN parameters self-adjustable and robust without predefined models or training for the parameters. A real-world dataset with more than one year traffic records is used to conduct experiments. The results show that DP-kNN can perform better than manually adjusted kNN and other benchmarking methods in terms of accuracy on average. This study also discusses the difference between holiday and workday traffic prediction as well as the usage of neighbour distance measurement.

Electronic toll collection (ETC) with combined information and communication technology has become a major concern in the intelligent transportation systems. In this paper, an efficient design of ETC system is proposed, which incorporates automatic vehicle classification, identification, and violation enforcement. In the proposed design, to enhance the level of security in data communication, a two stage protocols based on digital watermarking and encryption algorithms are introduced. Moreover, a short message service (SMS) based notification system is proposed to facilitate user convenience. A prototype of the proposed system is developed and found to meet the desired specifications. Here use of simple infrared technology minimizes both overall cost and complexity. In the design of the prototype, aspects related to the real life implementation have been taken into consideration. From a comparative performance analysis, it is found that the proposed scheme is superior to some of the existing methods in terms of advanced technological features, security, overall cost, and ease of implementation.

This article discusses how the structure of the measurement system affects the short-term forecasts of travel time based on it. The effects of section length and location of different measurement stations were investigated. The study used empirical data. The research was carried out on a 28-km long interurban two-lane highway section. The prediction models were made as feedforward multilayer perceptron neural networks. The main results showed that the division of long road sections into shorter sub-links in the travel time measurement system was important. Furthermore, it would be crucial to obtain information about traffic flow rates entering the section in order to time the start of congestion correctly. In conclusion, the structure of the monitoring system should be based on the analysis of a typical location and the development of congestion along the section.
