Botulism has been known for about three centuries, and since its discovery, botulinum toxin has been considered one of the most powerful toxins. However, throughout the 20th century, several medical applications have been discovered, among which the treatment of spasticity stands out. Botulinum toxin is the only pharmacological treatment recommended for spasticity of strokes and cerebral palsy. Although its use as an adjuvant treatment against spasticity in spinal cord injuries is not even approved, botulinum toxin is being used against such injuries. This article describes the advances that have been made throughout history leading to the therapeutic use of botulinum toxin and, in particular, its application to the treatment of spasticity in spinal cord injury.

O bruxismo é caracterizado pelo ato parafuncional de apertar ou rangerdos dentes, que pode ocorrer de maneira consciente ou inconsciente,durante o sono ou em vigília. Por ser de etiologia complexa, ainda nãoé possível estabelecer um tratamento padrão para todos os pacientes. Aterapêutica com toxina botulínica tipo A (TXB-A) é conservadora, dandoao cirurgião dentista a opção de parar a terapia em qualquer momento eretornar ao estado inicial sem efeitos adversos. Este artigo tem a intençãode demonstrar que a TXB-A pode ser válida no dia a dia da clínica odontológicapara o tratamento do Bruxismo em pacientes onde os sintomasnão foram controlados através dos recursos tradicionalmente oferecidos. Bruxism is characterized by the parafunctional act of grinding or clenchingthe teeth, which may occur in a conscious or unconscious way duringsleep or vigil. Due to its complex ethiology it is not possible yet to stablisha standard treatment to all patients. Treatments using botulinum toxin(TXB-A) are conservative, the dentist may stop at any given time, returningto its starting point, without any side effects. This paper has the intent ofshowing that treating bruxism with TXB-A is a valid alternative for patientswho did not have success with the traditional dental approach.
